The $25K Business Nobody Talks About
One truck. 50–60% margins.
Welcome to the JackQuisitions newsletter,
You don't need millions of dollars or some groundbreaking idea to build a great business.
Sometimes you need $25,000, a striping machine, and a willingness to do work most people overlook.
This week, I'm breaking down the surprisingly attractive economics of parking lot striping, including what it costs to start, how much a crew can produce, and why the real opportunity goes far beyond painting lines.
Ready For Your Next Acquisition?
Check out these acquisition opportunities that caught my eye this week:
Texas carpet cleaning business generating $315K in annual revenue and $75K cash flow, with nearly two decades of operating history, is listed for $300K.
Illinois landscaping company generating approximately $1.4M in annual revenue and $500K+ in SDE, with 50+ years of history and recurring maintenance revenue, is listed for $1.99M.
Georgia HVAC business generating $1M in annual revenue, with 2,000 customers, six full-time employees and 25+ years in business, is listed for $800K.
Parking Lot Striping Is More Interesting Than It Looks
Parking lot striping is about as boring as a business gets.
That's also part of what makes it interesting.
Every Walmart, apartment complex, shopping center, warehouse and school has a parking lot that eventually needs to be restriped. Depending on the market and weather, that can happen every two to four years.
And getting started doesn't require a massive investment.
A solid striping machine will run around $6,000 to $12,000. Add a trailer, marketing, business setup and other equipment and you could realistically launch for around $25,000.
The economics get even more interesting once you start putting crews on the road.
A typical 30 to 50-space job might generate $500 to $1,200, while larger jobs with ADA markings, stencils and more complicated layouts can reach $3,000 to $6,000+.
A good two-person crew can potentially produce around $3,000 per day, which puts annual revenue capacity somewhere around $400,000 per crew/truck.
Gross margins can land around 50% to 60%, with EBITDA margins potentially reaching 15% to 20%.
But there's a catch.
I don't think striping alone is the million-dollar opportunity.
The real opportunity is what you can sell after you have the customer.
Once you're maintaining someone's parking lot, you can potentially add sealcoating, pothole repair, asphalt repair and other pavement services. In colder markets, snow removal can help offset the seasonality that comes with striping.
That's how a relatively small striping operation can become a much larger parking lot maintenance company.
The other challenge is customer acquisition. This is a B2B business, so you're selling to property managers, HOAs, schools, municipalities and commercial property owners. Winning those first contracts requires getting out there and building relationships.
But once you're in?
That same customer may need you again every few years and could eventually buy several other services from you.
For someone young, hungry and willing to sell, $25,000 can get you into a surprisingly attractive business.
My Final Thoughts
Parking lot striping probably won't make you rich on its own, but it can give you an inexpensive entry point into a much larger pavement maintenance business.
Happy hunting,
